The Joy of Spring

Another journal background technique I wanted to try as a result of the
Art Journal Chat at Outlaw Womens (yahoo group)
This time its using the Serendipity technique which is loads of fun.

Here's the background which evolved
before I put the finishing foreground touches to it

I used pages of old sheet music for the base and then applied watered down acrylic paints and stamps using Stazon and Distress inkpads
 - from memory I did 4 different pages.
Then I cut them up into strips and then randomly
glued them onto my blank journal pages.

Heres the finished page spread
The quote is one from Brian Andreas
and the birds and body of the girl are from Crowabout Studio

I am entering this into the following challenges

Hopefully spring isn't too far away here in New Zealand !
I am definitely over these cold wintery days!

Friends have a song...

This mixed media canvas was inspired by a poem called Friends Have A Song.

Friends have a song that they sing together
Whether they sing in mind or spirit
And though others aren't aware of it
Hearts in tune to each other can hear it

You sang with me when I felt like singing
There was joy in my heart and you sang along.
You continued my song when my heart was empty
When I forgot the words...you remembered my song!

I know that now your heart is aching
And singing is too much for you to bear
I will always be here for you
For in your every sorrow I will share.

Now my song is quieted by your sadness
And I softly hum for you
Praying as I gently hum our song

Prayers of healing just for you
In your sorrow dearest friend, I share
Feeling so strongly your fear and pain
And I shall stay in spirit with you

Until we both can sing again
We shall sing together when things are better
And once again our voices will blend
For our hearts are joined together

Heart to heart and friend to friend!

Unfortunately I do not know the authors name
and have been unable to find it on the internet.
If someone knows the author's name,
please let me know so I can acknowledge same.

I have utilised lots of scraps and both positives and negatives
of die cuts and punches which reinforces the adage
- "never to throw anything away" !!

6 x 6 inch canvas
white gesso
yellow and orange acrylic paint
sheet music and old text

Life is ...

Another inky fingers morning here - I had a background technique that I wanted to try, that was discussed at the Art Journal chat on Outlaw Women's yahoo group. (thanks Robyn)

Again its another creation which doesn't have a full supplies list as when I get into the creating zone, especially with journal pages, I just grab and grab things and create.
Some of the supplies used include gesso, acrylic paints, colour wash spray, embossing folders,
washi tape, distress inkpads, blending tool, computer generated saying.

I must also acknowledge the two amazing steampunk themed digital images which I got from Vince over at his Crafty Moments blog - he has some AMAZING free digital images there.

Guardian Angel Tag

hmmm I seem to be going through a purple themed phase today and I have purple inky fingers to prove it!
This is an oversized tag measuring approximately 4 x 6 1/2 inches and I am thinking it would look GREAT as the focus point on a journal cover or the like.

and a close up of the flowers which started off a cream colour
Apologies, there is no supply list for this one.
It just evolved and I was busily pulling all sorts of things out of my craft room
without taking much notice of what I was using in the end.
Suffice to say there are colour sprays, distress inkpads, gesso,
patterned papers,washi tape,
ribbons, flowers and other embellishments in amongst it all.

I am entering this tag into the following challenges

The Rhythm Of the Sea

Over on the Art With No Boundaries blog, the current fortnightly challenge is The Rhythm of the Sea;
along with Anything goes.

As anything ocean and beach related is dear to my heart,
I couldn't wait to create something for this challenge.
I was browsing through the local discount store
and spotted a small plastic treasure chest in the toy section
and seeing it got me inspired.

And this is the result.
I didn't have to do anything to the outside of the chest
- I think it looks aged and perfect
for the look I was going for as it is.

And here is the inside
Supplies used:
Discover new oceans digital stamp - CS Designs
Copic marker
Toy plastic treasure chest
Corrugated iron patterned paper
Gauze
Colour sprays - sailboat blue, lettuce (Ranger)
Green pigment ink diluted with water in spray bottle
Distressing tool (Tim Holtz)
Vintage photo distress stain (Tim Holtz)
Eyelet yarn
Shells and driftwood

I really enjoyed making this piece
and I think I will be frequenting the discount stores
with a very open mind, from now on.
